Common Purpose Matrix

Broader perspectives, wider networks, better leaders

What is Matrix?

Matrix is a leadership development programme that brings together senior leaders from all three sectors - private, public and voluntary/community.

For nearly 20 years, Matrix has provided unique leadership development. Now we have taken the programme and radically enhanced its structure. The new programme takes participants beyond the boundaries of their own town or city and exposes them to leaders, challenges and leadership strategies elsewhere too.

We have also introduced a new flexibility – so leaders on the programme can tailor the experience around core days in which everyone participates.

Broader perspectives. Wider networks. Greater personal flexibility. It's Matrix: and it now goes further than ever before.

What happens on the programme?

Participants from the private, public and voluntary sectors commit to six days across a five month period on which they will all work together. Then they can choose from an exciting range of options to complete a full 10 day programme. For the first time, these options are open to both participants and Common Purpose graduates.

In the process, participants explore real-life challenges from the public, private and voluntary sectors. They will visit prisons, housing developments, businesses, hospitals and factories to find inspiration outside their usual experience and to hone their own leadership abilities through collaboration with their peers in other sectors.

Matrix options

After the six core days, participants select from a range of options, some of which are full days, some half days, which can be combined as participants choose.

There are two optional programme days - a local and a national ‘Quest’. On local Quests, participants gain new perspectives on local issues. On national Quests, they step outside their current location and spend a day immersed in another city, town or region to learn how their counterparts elsewhere tackle challenges.

Participants can also choose to attend as many of the four half day ‘Understanding change’ modules as they wish. Here, participants have the opportunity to explore real-life leadership issues from either the business, voluntary or public sector, and meet the leaders responsible for tackling them.

For the first time, Matrix also offers graduates of other Common Purpose programmes an opportunity to refresh their understanding of the local context, continue their leadership development and extend their networks.

What are the benefits?

Participants will:

  • develop broader horizons as their networks expand far beyond their specialist area and existing thinking

  • learn to influence beyond their immediate authority – both inside and outside of their organisation

  • enhance their ability to adapt faster; and learn how to capitalise on opportunities and duck threats

  • become more creative and innovative and relish complexity rather than seeing it as hurdle

  • learn to lead beyond authority and effect real, lasting change in any situation.

Where and when is Matrix held?

Matrix is held over five or six month period, in several locations around UK.

How much does it cost?

The fee for Matrix is £4,225 + VAT.

Ability to pay is not one of the selection criteria and each leadership programme maintains a bursary fund to cover the costs of those who are genuinely unable to meet the full fee. However, every participant is asked to make a contribution.

If you would like to apply for a bursary, please fill in the section of the form for bursary candidates. If you need to discuss this further, please contact us.
