About us

Who are we, what do we do and how?

"Of all the leadership programmes that I know of, those run by Common Purpose are by far the best, you only have to see the lasting effect on those who have participated in them to know that they work and work well. Civil society in a wide range of countries has benefited hugely from Common Purpose." - Professor Charles Handy, Management writer and broadcaster

Common Purpose believes that:

  • the problems that most need solving cross boundaries - and the way to solve them is to do the same
  • leaders are most effective when they broaden their horizons and their networks
  • real change doesn’t just happen: leaders need to make it happen

That’s why we deliver unique leadership development programmes which:

  • are rooted in real life, not in the classroom
  • attract leaders from unexpected places
  • involve participants in a wide range of unfamiliar leadership situations
  • prize diversity as a source of creativity and deeper problem-solving

Through this, we aim to:

  • give leaders the skills, the connections and the vision they need to lead more effectively
  • push them to extend their influence - and take responsibility - beyond their own organisation, locality and culture, not just within it
  • inspire leaders to effect real change, both at work and in the wider world.

Very few people emerge from Common Purpose with their prejudices - or working practices - unchanged. As their perspective gets wider, their vision improves. As their vision improves, their decision-making gets better. They forge networks that can have a major impact on their organisation and the community (networks which no other experience can provide).

This can have far-reaching consequences. And can unlock leadership potential in a genuinely different way.

Common Purpose programmes produce people who lead beyond their authority and can produce change beyond their direct circle of control.

The benefits of developing diverse leaders

We are committed to looking for leaders in unexpected places - and then exposing them to the information and the perspectives they need to be more effective. In the process, they meet new people, make new connections and find new ways of working with people who may not view the world in the same way.

We have a fundamental belief in the power of diversity. This stems from a conviction that real - and sustainable - answers only emerge when the widest range of viewpoints come together. So, when we recruit participants to any of our programmes, we deliberately bring together people from different sectors, professions, backgrounds and positions. Read more about the benefits...

Since 1989, more than 120,000 people have been involved in Common Purpose and 20,000 leaders from every area of the UK have completed one or more of our programmes.

We value diversity and constantly strive to provide equality of opportunity as an employer and in the provision and delivery of all our activities. We positively encourage applications from all sections of the community and are working hard to ensure that our programmes and services meet the requirements of people with disabilities.
