InsideOUT

Bigger picture, sharper focus, better leaders

What is InsideOUT?

Common Purpose programmes have always been about developing leaders by broadening the perspective of each participant, and of the group as a whole. Now, for the first time, we have designed a new programme to amplify this effect.

Common Purpose InsideOUT brings together leaders from distinct locations in the ‘powerhouse’ circle that surrounds London, enabling participants to see how local decisions are affected by wider regional issues. The programme invites participants to examine their own locality and leadership challenges, to reveal how each area is interconnected, often in surprising ways, what the leaders can learn from each other and what they can achieve by working together.

Using the proven leadership development techniques developed by Common Purpose over nearly 20 years, it is a rare opportunity for leaders from all around one of Europe’s most productive and vibrant areas to deepen their understanding, broaden their perspectives and expand their leadership capabilities.

What happens on the programme?

The participants, drawn from the private, public and voluntary sectors, will investigate, at first hand, local, regional and national problems. They will visit a range of organisations – from prisons, housing developments and hospitals to businesses and manufacturing plants – in order to experience leadership challenges and find inspiration outside their usual experience.

They will develop their leadership abilities through site visits, panel discussions, expert briefings and exposure to a variety of different approaches to leadership.

What are the benefits?

Participants will:

  • strengthen their leadership skills

  • build collaborative relationships

  • practice leading in different contexts

  • gain a broader outlook from the diversity of opinion and experiences

  • develop their ability to lead beyond authority.

Participants gain:

  • an understanding of how their place works - the role of different sectors, the levers of power, the drivers of future change

  • access to a broader and more diverse network of relationships with senior leaders and key figures locally and more widely

  • a wider geographical perspective from which they can examine the interplay of local, regional and national factors

  • a more externally focussed ‘radar’ with which to spot strategic opportunities and how these can work to local advantage

  • a stronger foundation from which to produce real change.

Where and when is InsideOUT held?

The eight-day programme brings together over fifty leaders from around the South East and East “circle”. The participants explore what it means to lead beyond authority together, before working in local groups to focus on the individual leadership challenges of the location in which they operate.

Each locality within this ‘circle’ is favoured and jinxed by their proximity to each other and the capital. As the programme unfolds, participants will investigate their connections to each other’s locations and to London, reflecting on what this means to their local context.

How much does it cost?

The fee for InsideOUT is £3,500 + VAT.

Ability to pay is not one of the selection criteria and each programme maintains a bursary fund to cover the costs of those who are genuinely unable to meet the full fee. However, every participant is asked to make a contribution.

If you would like to apply for a bursary, please fill in the section of the form for bursary candidates. If you need to discuss this further, please contact us.
