Improving skills through public service contracts

Under new government plans, private firms requesting public service contracts will have to offer skills training and information on trade unions to workers.

The government said in a joint statement with the CBI and TUC that it would use its purchasing power over public contracts as a means of furthering its skills agenda.

This announcement came shortly after a similar scheme was launched within the draft equality bill, which stated that contract bidders were obliged to publish diversity information to workers.

The government’s statement said: “Our aim is to ensure that employees working on government contracts are recruited, retained and motivated to deliver high-quality services.”
