Business school leadership

According to a joint report by the Advanced Institute of Management Research and the Association of Business Schools, business school deans are currently facing as many complex challenges as heads of organisations during the credit crunch.

On top of creating their institution's strategic direction and positioning, deans are finding themselves having to manage its financial performance, its external reputation and image, and stakeholder expectations.

In the survey deans said they saw themselves as having to fulfill "an impossibly broad range of leadership skills", feeling responsible as everything from negotiators and strategists to managers and bureaucrats.

Deans also said the encouragement of innovation, being self-aware, creating energy, and having academic credibility were also key characteristics that lead to success.
