Public sector diversity drive
The government has embarked on a new scheme to promote diversity across the civil service.
The strategy will implement measures to ensure that the UK’s civil servants are “truly representative” of the people they serve and will focus on culture change and behaviours, leadership and accountability, talent management and diversity at all levels.
Looking ahead for the new strategy, Sir Gus O’Donnell, head of the civil service, said: “A diverse civil service which reflects the society we serve will enable us to deliver better public services.”
There will be a new ‘diversity champions network’, which will comprise of senior level diversity champions who will be responsible for the implementation of the strategy.
Other measures include five-year targets to increase the share of women in senior leadership positions and increasing the number of people from ethnic minority backgrounds in senior positions from 3.4% to 5%.
