Changing demographics will impact universities
Some higher education establishments may have to close or merge as they struggle to compete for students in the coming decades, according to a review of third level education by umbrella body Universities UK.
The report said a drop in public funding is expected as the number of 18-year-olds decreases between 2009 and 2027.
Fewer students will reduce demand for university places.
Taking into consideration changing demographics and increasing economic anxiety, University UK predicted three potential outcomes to the situation.
One scenario could be non-traditional private providers being granted powers to award degrees by selecting course areas with comparatively low entry costs.
The second possible situation would have employers taking power in the university sector, selecting students who would work during their studies, some of which could be conducted over the internet.
The third scenario was simply an ongoing struggle for higher education without employer input.
